HSK Instant Lookup is designed to be privacy‑friendly from the ground up.

The extension does not collect, sell, or share any personally identifiable information. It only uses the text you explicitly select to look up HSK vocabulary information.

1. Overview

HSK Instant Lookup (“the Extension”) respects your privacy. This policy describes what data the Extension processes, how it is used, and what is not collected.

2. Data Collection

The Extension does not collect any personally identifiable information (PII). It does not collect, store, or transmit your name, email address, account information, or browsing history.

3. API Usage

The Extension uses an external API to retrieve HSK vocabulary data:

API Service: https://whsk-backend.vercel.app (and its deployments)
Purpose: To obtain HSK level, pinyin, and English definitions for selected Chinese text.
Data Sent: Only the Chinese text you explicitly select for lookup.
Not Sent: No PII, browsing history, cookies, or other sensitive data.

4. Local Storage

To improve performance, the Extension may cache data locally:

The Extension uses Chrome’s local storage (chrome.storage.local) to cache HSK data.
All cached data is stored only in your browser and never uploaded by the Extension.
The cache is used solely to speed up lookups and reduce API calls.
You can clear this data at any time from your browser’s extension settings.

5. Data Sharing

The Extension does not share, sell, or transfer your data to any third parties. Specifically, the Extension does not:

Send data to advertisers.
Use data for analytics, tracking, or profiling.
Use data for any commercial purposes beyond providing HSK vocabulary information.

6. Third‑Party Services

The only third‑party service used is the HSK vocabulary API described above. It is used solely to provide vocabulary information and is not intended to collect user identities.

7. Permissions

The Extension requests the following browser permissions in order to function:

Storage: To cache HSK data locally for faster lookups.
Access to all websites: To show the HSK tooltip on any page when you select Chinese text.

These permissions are used only to provide the Extension’s core functionality and not for tracking or advertising.

8. Children’s Privacy

The Extension is not directed to children under 13, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated from time to time. Any changes will be published on this page with an updated “Last Updated” date.
